ITYM 2014

Jacobs University

......Welcome to the official website of the International Tournament of Young Mathematicians (ITYM)!

......The ITYM is a team competition for high school students from all over the world. Its purpose is to stimulate interest in mathematics and its applications, to develop scientific thinking, communication skills and teamwork.

......The ITYM is a mathematics competition, but it is very different from most other contests and olympiads. Its mathematics, and the way it is organized, tries to convey a spirit of research mathematics as much as possible, in many ways: participation is in teams (at most six students), there is ample time to work on the problems (they are published several months in advance), the problems contain parts without known solution, and students present the solutions to each other (in the spirit of “peer-reviewing” ‑ this is a sort of research debate involving Reporter, Opponent, Reviewer and Observer).

......The ITYM developed out of national tournaments in some countries, especially from Eastern Europe. The need for an international tournament became increasingly clear over the last few years. The ITYM was motivated, in particular, by the growing popularity of the International Young Physicists' Tournament (IYPT).

......The sixth ITYM is being co-organized by the Jacobs University and Animath and will take place between 12th and 20th July 2014 (details to be announced). Home of the ITYM 2014 will be Jacobs University in Bremen, Germany, which already hosted the 50th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO 2009) and the “Modern Mathematics” International Summer Schools in 2011 and 2013.

......Special Feature of the ITYM 2014: the winning team will be invited to one of the world’s top-most mathematics events ‑ the awarding of the Abel Prize 2015 in Oslo by the King of Norway!

......The list of problems for the sixth ITYM has been published here.

......For the Organizing Committee,

......Mikhail Hlushchanka, Jacobs University Bremen
......Prof. Dierk Schleicher PhD, Jacobs University Bremen
......Dr. David Zmiaikou, MPI Bonn
